UC San Diego Extension is the continuing education and public programs arm of the university and educates approximately 54,000 enrollees a year. UC San Diego Extension’s Online Learning Portal is a great example of my passion for technology and education. Soon after joining Extension, it became clear that we needed a different learning management system (LMS). We needed a LMS that would scale to meet the growing demand for online courses.
I led the systematic review of our LMS requirements and an analysis of commercial and open source LMS options. Constrained by the desire to limit internal technical support, the leadership consensus supported our move to an ASP hosted Blackboard LMS solution. This solution provided scalability without introducing prohibitive upfront costs. Technically sound, the Bb LMS enabled our programs to grow unconstrained. |
The University of California, Office of the President initiated an Online Instruction Pilot Project in 2010. We were invited to summarize our online learning capabilities in a short presentation for the University of California, Board of Regents. This animated piece, which I wrote, outlines UCSD Extension's online learning capabilities developed during my tenure.
Subsequently, the UCOP Online Instruction Pilot Project invited faculty from all University of California campuses to submit a proposal to teach fully online courses for the pilot project. UCSD Music Professor, Shlomo Dubnov submitted a winning proposal to develop his music 173 course. Working collaboratively, we developed his course using the Sakai open source learning management system. (Click on he arrow to the right to watch the short video.) |

Instructor and student support and training are important success indicators in online leaning. UCSD Extension's LMS Portal provides a wealth of text-based and video-based tutorials, and a calendar of weekly training and hands-on help events. We deliver live webinars, face-to-face training, taped tutorials, and an online course to aid instructors in learning new tools and teaching strategies.
